What’s funny about this is that in Star Trek he’s quoting Sherlock Holmes, but in Sherlock he’s quoting Spock.

Although the original quote was from Sherlock Holmes. It was used in TOS and then in Star Trek (2009) as a reference to SH. Then in Sherlock 2x02, Sherlock says it and John calls him ‘Spock’ as though it’s a reference to Star Trek and Wibbly Wobbly Inception of the quote, yo.

Canonically Spock is a descendant of Sherlock Holmes.

So basically don’t watch The Cage (the original Pilot of the TOS) because they kind of rehash it in here and basically manipulate the clips from that to help out with their episode ahahaa Roddenberry you sly dog

Basically, you didn’t need to have watched the Pilot because sneaky Roddenberry put it in here so it’s just a pain watching it again ahaha

But yesssssss

I like the fact that HEY NOW ESTABLISHING FAR BACK SHOT is the first thing we see

Also ffffffff what happened to Pike—god, I was prepared by a meme, but SHIT. This is Pike’s first appearance if we ignore The Cage (and even then it’s not the same actor). But I loved Kirk’s steadfast belief in Spock—that is must have been changed if it wasn’t recorded by computer logs. And yet in the end, Kirk has to be forced to make the decision—he has to entertain the facts that either someone diverted the Enterprise’s course to the starbase, or someone made up that request—could that someone be Spock?

And I really loved how McCoy asserted everything on the person who lied NOT being Spock.

Holy shit though—Spock keeping check on Kirk and yet finding out that Kirk has already pushed the limits of the shuttle—Kirk’s forcing him into a position like this

and Kirk and the other dude in the shuttle—Kirk’s like you had no right to come aboard, notes that two hours of oxygen left, and his next thought is hoping the Enterprise never comes back so that Spock can never be court-martialed. He’s really loyal and worried for him.

And it’s really interesting too—because at this point you’re wondering why the hell would Spock do all of this? And then he turns himself over once the engines are gone—he wants to be in for mutiny. This is how he can save both the Captain and the other dude, and at the same time guarantee the goal that is reaching Talos IV.

Oh dang though, the preliminary hearing is interesting.

first off: KIRK IN A QUARTERLY PHYSICAL and shirtless.

Have you noticed both times that he’s completely comfortable with bridge coming up and seeing him shirtless? Also, Bones being all like if I told you everytime the red alert came on, I’d be talking to myself—which really speaks about how little time they always have. And honestly, not complaining about shirtless shatner, but I feel that’s like some kind of fanservice ahaha

Anyway, “i’ll let you know when this becomes a democracy” I’m CRYING KIRK’S WITTY ahhahaha<3 what a babe.

also can I say how Kirk consulting his senior/bridge crew in a meeting room on major decisions IS VERY NICE??? Yo, can we have some new fic that does this? /note to self write some AOS fic that does this. Because wow yes. Also bridge is no place for a meeting, but I get the points, but everyone’s always yelling over each other in the new movie to be heard ahahaha too fast.

I also really like how Kirk takes initiative over reprimanding Bailey—it’s curt, it’s professional, and it’s very reminiscent how there’s kind of no-nonsense. They’re still in the military. Also I really love how Kirk has the best interests of the crew in mind—

phaser crew = slow in locking them into directional feed

engineering decks = faster, program series of attacks & evasive maneuvers until they get it

but it’s really interesting how even though from Bones we learn that Bailey kind of reminds Kirk of himself 11 years ago—Kirk isn’t pulling any punches. Also, I think Bailey is personally way in over his head—that kid is still wet-nosed and really new from how he reacts and still comments bitterly over earlier in the episode about Spock—yo, dude, talking rough about higher ranked officers IS NOT A COOL THING TO DO WE LEARN THIS NUMBER ONE THING IN CADETS, WHERE DO YOU GET OFF ON TALKING THEM OFF. But uhhh yeah, he’s really new, he’s not good at panicking—I think Kirk has moved him too

yeah bro, that is NOT A GOOD IDEA definitely. With us in Air Cadets, there was this huge gap in NCMs vs the younger cadets, but if you promote them too fast, they don’t know SHIT. They don’t know how things work, they don’t have time to perfect the drill or everything else—these are tips and tricks that you learn along the way, and Bailey is certainly too young. Maybe Kirk wants to push Bailey the way he was pushed a long time ago—because he sees the potential. But Bailey probably isn’t really ready!

thoughts on AOS Kirk and TOS Kirk

(I’m half asleep and whatever I wrote is probably bluH? so it’s okay ahahaha)

now that I’m actually semi-marathoning the TOS, I’m really starting to get thinky at how utterly different AOS Kirk seems to be from his TOS counterpart—it’s really hard to sort of comopare the two—and that’s not in the ‘oh that’s because he’s older now’ kind of way. He seems to be an entirely different person. I guess it’s also because of how modernized he’s made to be and how if we go about it, the AOS literally is an alternate universe that isn’t a younger version of them that got altered, but just another alternate universe a bit closer to mirror verse. Err, in other words, waldorph’s headcanon that AOS is actually not a younger TOS directly, but a younger TOS alternate universe, hence weapons, technology, everything.

But there’s a lot of discrepancies, and I think the ‘raw-ness’ is a tough pill to swallow. Because right now, I think AOS Kirk really is an entirely different kind of Kirk, and that’s not bad. But yeah, I think with modernization comes a lot of different characterizations. AOS Kirk really just likes sex (which totally isn’t bad). TOS Kirk wants a relationship. Granted, there’s like a little less than ten years, so probably once AOS Kirk’s settled down a bit and more comfortable in his role—I mean, he hasn’t had a time to get used to his crew. WOW YES I WOULD LIKE A TRANSFORMATION TRANSITION FIC someone go write this vision of loveliness.

It’s going to be great magnum opus to anyone who can feasibly mesh a AOS Kirk transition to some aspect of the TOS Kirk, because that’s always been lovely.

Because wow, can’t wait to see the Kirk that becomes. Ngl though, half of why I love old shows so much is that they let older actors be the main characters hehehe. Older people got the charm charm pow those young ‘uns be rockin’ our style~

Yeee, interesting episode!

Kirk is friendly with his crew, and yet he maintains that careful balance between friendliness and rank. He knows everyone of his crew by name and rank, he looks out for them and he cares for them. With Christine, he’s very amiable (personally I’m saddened by the decision of the new movie to just brush her off), and he knows about her personal life and they’re good friends enough that he knows about Roger and everything, but that doesn’t disturb the balance of their military background.

ALSO EACH LOSS OF HIS CREWMEN CAUSES KIRK TO BE SUPER SAD. Whoever says he doesn’t care or is just a playa, you need to reevaluate. Plus the thing with Andrea was to get outta there, man. Ain’t no playa there. Kirk’s pretty smart too. He figured really fast that he had to think about something that would clue Spock into what was wrong—like damn, I wouldn’t be able to think that fast—especially since how can you guarantee Spock would know something was wrong, or that you would encounter Spock?

Also him asking Christine about if he asked her to betray Roger—a-aww. Also him and android him having a duke off talk about why eating is awesome and why humans are great. The thing I like about the TOS episodes is that they always have the things to think about: this one was about hey is androids that good? Are superior human beings that good? Ish, about hey uhm if we got rid of fear and hunger and wars, even then, what about love and compassion? What’s the meaning of it if we destroy it? Also found it really interesting too that Roger was like BUT NO ONE WILL DIE and I was like lmao Rock killed people bro i don’t think you have much of a thing to go by

anyway just my love to the friendship and professional relationship of Christine and Kirk! Kirk also holding her hand when she was scared aww<3 Because, y’know those things exist

Mudd is really fun. I like him as a character. I need to write a story in which he appears in AOS and he tries to recruit Kirk to help him out when Kirk is down on his luck or something. He’s like that really fun kind of character you just never knew you wanted, but can be explored so well. EXCITING ADVENTURES and dramatically dark turns around! Charismatic and lovely. I like Mudd a lot.

Also really like that Kirk is very direct, and he asks after Eve’s opinion, making sure she’s okay with staying here, if this is what she wants. ALSO I LIKE THE SORT OF LOVE STORY BETWEEN EVE AND THE MINER. Also, McCoy and Spock banter is best. THOUGH NOT GONNA LIE THOUGH, SPOCK HAVING ALL THAT SASS being like “pls” the entire episode was great.

s1e05: The enemy within

GOOD EPISODE. I like episodes that teach me more about characterization.

Captain of the crew. Can’t afford to be anything but perfect in the eyes of the crew. If he does, they lose faith and Kirk loses command. SPOCK KNEW IMMEDIATELY IT COULDN’T BE THE CAPTAIN. Bless Spock.

The more compassionate part of Kirk is how much he worries and cares. How much he’s so intrinsically honest—we can say (maybe? I’m no psychologist) that maybe this was how he was, before he had to develop more of a sharper personality that combined both compassion and another one that you need to function as a human being—not telling everyone everything, working things out—especially as captain and etc.

The base of Kirk’s darker personality is his identity. He’s Captain of the ship. He wants a relationship and he’ll do anything to get it—baseless, animal, violating his coworker. He’ll cover his own tracks. He’s paranoid, suspicious, and he doesn’t trust that he’ll ever be safe—he’s always looking over his shoulder. He’s super dark, and won’t stop at anything to get what he wants.

Oh my god. He’s super clever, manipulative. This is the darker aspect of Jim. He’s aware of the ship layout. To avoid being found, he’ll go to the lower levels. This is the Jim aspect that’s more apparent than the regular Jim in the mirror verse. He’s learned how to use his (also at one point I thought he had Chris Pine shaped eyes and was like HOLY FUCKING CHRIST I SEE WHY THE CASTING HAPPENED) resources, rely on himself, and just. God.

You really need both.

BEING CAPTAIN IS HARD.

(only half-way at the episode at this point. Will edit as I go through.)

OH MY GOD DARKER PART OF KIRK’S PERSONALITY IS REALLY UNORTHODOX—HE’S ON TOP OF THE ENGINEERING THINGS. He has courage to do things that’ll make him get hurt if he’s not careful—because those are necessities. This is a Kirk that uses his environment. He’s always thinking several steps ahead, but this one is really intense. Yow damn.

Holy snap the man’s a really good tracker/sneaker-by kind of thing.

Oh, oh, but also he’s plenty scared of light/err nicer/more compassionate Kirk. He’s maybe really apprehensive of it, can’t predict him, really paranoid so he’s not sure what’s going to be happening. OH MY GOD DARKER KIRK IS REALLY SCARED kind of—because why would he keep reiterating he’s the Captain—because he knows he doesn’t deserve it, maybe? Maybe because he’s so scared of it being taken from him? Hrmm. Nothing is very solid or reassured with him. He’s always looking over his shoulder. Always expecting. ohhh can’t kill himm hrrmm

GHHHK “you need me. i need you.” I AM HIT IN THE FEELINGS

“I DON’T NEED YOU.”

Also it’s really interesting because normally Kirk knows what to do. He’s assertive with his orders when he gives them, and he gives an assertive tone. Compassionate Kirk is never good at taking initiative. Everyone’s pace is kind of faster—in the kind of way I feel like he would be more at home happier just having friends and everything and never having to deal with violence and politics.

what makes a man fit for command? Mind you, you kind of learn all of this when you’re in a military structure—you earn your rank, you earn the respect. Respect is earned, not given. But you also aren’t the friends of your subordinates. You have to be willing to yell at them for their mistakes, assert punishments, you have to take that all on you. It’s the evil side—so really, evil isn’t bad if properly disciplined and used (ish?)
